Locals launch massive protest against Assam government’s eviction move

Hundreds of locals of Barduar Bagan village under Palasbari circle in Kamrup district in Assam protested and expressing strong opposition to the Assam government's plan to evict them from the area.

Guwahati, Assam, February 14 (HBTV): Hundreds of locals of Barduar Bagan village under Palasbari circle in Kamrup district staged a massive protest on Wednesday expressing strong opposition to the Assam government's decision to evict them from the area. 

The villagers are demanding that the government protect their land, stating that they have lived there for more than a century. 

According to sources, more than 3,000 tribal people from the tea tribes, Rabha community, and the Boro community among others, have been living on the forest land for many years in 10 villages under Palasbari circle. 

When informed about the move, there was a stir among the people living there, and they began protesting. 

The protest was organized by various groups including the All India Farmers Committee, the Land Rights Joint Struggle Committee, the Assam Land Protection Council, the Garia-Maria Jatiya Parishad, Nikhil Rabha Satra Sangha, Kamrup District Rabha Satra Sangha, Barduar-Bholagaon Regional Rabha Satra Sangha, the Sixth Schedule Demand Committee, and regional women.

Protesters raised slogans against the government calling Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, MLA Hemang Thakuria, and Revenue Minister Yogen Mohan ‘liars.’ They also displayed placards with messages of defiance.

A meeting was also held to discuss the future of the land and to demand that the government intervene to prevent the eviction.
